Zana Bell - Author update

What am I working on?
The finishing touches are going on my new novel, Fool’s Gold coming out in October; a NZ historical adventure set during the 1860s gold rush. Lady Guinevere Stanhope is cast up alone and virtually penniless on the lawless West Coast where she encounters Quinn O’Donnell, an Irish doctor turned gold seeker. Both are intent on making fortunes to realise their goals but life, as we know, is always out to confound such dreams.

How does my work differ from other writers in the genre?
The New Zealand setting is an unusual one for an historical but the 1860s were a heady time. The hitherto remote British colony was suddenly swamped a frenzied gold rush as thousands of men flooded in from all over the world, exhilarated by visions of gold.  Shanty towns more akin to the American Wild West than Victorian England were flung up in weeks. Fortunes were made and lost, class systems buckled and women suddenly had opportunities such as they’d never experienced

Why do I write what I write?
While I love writing in different genre, the female characters are always my main focus. I particularly enjoy writing about women who pursue what they love; pushing boundaries, blazing new trails or daring to be different. And of course, these feisty women need men who are equally exceptional.

How does my writing process work?
Ideally, I l like to write early in the morning before the rest of the day rushes in and takes over. The reality is that I fit it in when and where I can.  The books that I read are usually related to the wip not only for research purposes but also to keep the essence of the era in my bones. I have a tiny office out in the garden and the walls are filled with paintings, photos and maps. I spend far too much time looking for inspiration in Sudoku!

The next writers will be continuing this blog tag next Monday.

It is my pleasure to introduce: Rae Roadley

Rae worked in publishing and public relations and attended countless creative writing courses before she qualified as a journalist. She was a TVNZ new media subeditor before returning to her hometown to report for the daily newspaper.

After falling for a farmer, she moved to his farm on the Kaipara Harbour and began freelance writing. After being charged in quick succession by a couple of bulls, she started writing newspaper columns about rural life. Feedback inspired her to write a memoir, Love at the End of the Road. Rae has placed in fiction contests and a media award, and is a writing tutor for NorthTec. She enjoys reading, moving cattle, her border collie Floss, riding horses and life in the country.
